Mollie & Monica

When a work opportunity comes calling in LA i’ll be honest in saying it’s very difficult for me to turn it down.  Los Angeles is one of my favourite cities in the world and because of the amount of time I’ve spent out there, it feels like a second home.  I lived in Downtown LA for 4 months in 2012 while filming Chasing  on E! Entertainment and 5 years on i still have the same buzz every time i land at LAX.  This trip however was different… I decided to take my mum out with me to show her the city i speak so excitedly of and of course to have some company in between studio dates.

It’s always tricky being the tour guide but on this day off mum asked to go to Santa Monica having just watched La La Land the week before flying out.  I secretly think she was hoping to bump into Ryan Gosling on the Santa Monica Pier, like in the film, but unfortunately for her the only man tto start up a convo was the man trying to sell her a Santa Monica t-shirt …How can they always tell a tourist!? Ha!

After hitting new heights on the Santa Monica Big Wheel we then strolled down the endless beach where you see all the locals using the beach as their local gym.  It’s fascinating.  There’s all sorts of apparatus set up and it’s packed with people working out.  I’ve never seen anything quite like it! It’s just so California!

Just watching them work out made me hungry, so we left them to the belly workouts and decided to go and fill ours.  I can’t say i had researched into unique, one-off cafes, but i did take mum to one of my favourite American food chains, The Cheesecake Factory.  Instantly mum’s face lit up when she thought i was meaning we were going to eat only cheesecake for lunch, which of course it does have, but it also has one of the most eclectic menus i have ever seen and the enchiladas are truly scrumptious! The portions as you would expect in America are huge – no complaints from me! – and this particular one has a rooftop outdoor area so we were totally in our element, chatting and laughing in the spring sunshine, watching the busy shoppers below with the twinkle of the sea in the distance.

We had an absolute blast there. This fabulous beachfront town is everything you expect from a location just a beach pebble’s throw from one of the most fashionable and exhilarating cities in the world. We even ended it with a bang when mum got hit on by a 20 something year old guy in Starbucks on our way home! You go girl!!

From LA with love,

Mollie King
